Digital Retouching

Southam Studios unique Premium Service provides the very highest quality protraiture and print finishing. When you place your order, the images are handled individually, with every print checked for colour, density and any retouching that may be needed.

Colour Colour imbalance is corrected, to ensure the right hue of skin tones, backdrop and regalia. We ensure colour correct images by calibrating to international colour charts at the time portraits are taken, and then through a rigorous production process. During production, highly skilled operators work with monitors that are calibrated weekly, and our colour laboratory, adhering to international standards, enables us to closely monitor print quality.
	Density Individual contrast and density correction is performed on every photograph to make allowance for different skin tones, backdrop brightness and clothing colour. This ensures correct brightness and maximum detail visibility of the print. Our exclusive use of archival quality Kodak Endura paper ensures a lifetime of enjoyment with prints that will not fade.
Acne This is a major area of our work, and one that is neglected by many studios. Minor levels of acne are removed as a matter of course by our retouching artists, taking care to retain original birth marks (unless it is requested that these be removed or minimised as well). Major acne removal or other reconstruction work is only done on request and in consultation with the client. Retouching fees may be incured.
	Softening lines Our skilled retouchers take great care when softening character lines. This is done in a subtle manner, so you may not even notice the changes - unless you saw a before and after print! Harsh skin conditions and scarring can be retouched at a client's request, but may incur an additional charge.
Shine After a ceremony lasting over two hours - often in the hotter part of the year - skin tends to get shiny and reflect light badly. Skin reflections look unsightly in portraits, and our retouching team take the time to remove or reduce them to provide a natural, pleasing skin tone in keeping with the formal nature of the day.
	Clothing On the day our experienced team of photographers and floor staff endeavour to ensure that all clothing is neatly presented, and robes and trenchers are correctly worn. However, due to our lack of control over such things as tangled trencher tassels and gowns with marks on them, and the sheer number of portraits shot in quite a short time, some corrections may need to be made at production time to ensure a perfect result. Premium Service retouching artists seamlessly remove small imperfections.
Shadows Some hair styles may cause conspicuous shadows on the face - something we don't notice looking at a person, but which may be terribly obvious in a portrait. Our skilled retouching artists ensure these shadows are removed or toned down to a level where they are not as prominent. Shadows also often cause a darkening around the eyes - easily remedied.
	Reflections Many modern compound lenses reflect very strongly, but this provides no problems for our gifted retouching team. Skilled retouching removes annoying reflections from glasses, whilst maintaining the structure of the eye.
